Water

Reverse osmosis pipeQGC is investigating options to treat water produced from coal seam gas extraction.

Water is released as a by-product of coal seam gas extraction.

Water harvested from QGC’s Berwyndale South gas field, near Chinchilla, compares favourably to bore water from the Great Artesian Basin, containing between 2,000 and 3,000 parts per million of total dissolved solids.

Further, drinking water produced from QGC’s Berwyndale South gas field during a six-month reverse osmosis plant trial in 2005-06, was found to meet World Health Organisation guidelines for potable drinking water.

QGC is also pursuing industrial supply, entering into a Water Supply Agreement to deliver coal seam water to the proposed Cameby Downs coal mine.

The company has sought out and assessed a range of treatment technologies from around the world to determine which systems can provide the most environmentally and economically sustainable means of harvesting, treating and re-using the water.

This research has identified some exciting opportunities and QGC is in the early stages of testing some of these for their commercial viability.
